How to Join the Playtesting Team

Introduction

Playtesting is one of the most important parts of building a miniatures game like Democracy Drop Troopers. It is how we verify that the rules function as intended, that missions create the right level of pressure, and that the experience aligns with the spirit of the Helldivers video game. Joining the playtesting team is not about getting an early look at content. It is about contributing to the accuracy, clarity, and reliability of the game system. Every session you run and every report you submit directly strengthens the final game. Your participation is valued, appreciated, and treated as an essential act of service to the project.

What Playtesters Do

Playtesters help validate the game under real conditions and ensure the game system behaves as intended. The role is straightforward, structured, and essential to the project’s accuracy and long‑term stability. Playtesters are expected to:

Identify issues that do not match expectations set by the Helldivers video game, including pacing, tone, and tactical flow
All necessary materials such as the rules, unit and weapons cards, quickstart references, and the feedback form, will be made available to members of the playtesting team. The objective remains simple: identify errors, confirm strengths, and ensure the game performs as intended when placed in the hands of real players.

  • Read the rules and interpret them exactly as written to confirm clarity and accuracy
  • Schedule and host games, either solo or with a group
  • Record and report results using the materials available to the team
  • Ask focused questions when something feels inconsistent or incomplete

What makes for a Good Playtester

Playtesters are expected to approach the game with care, consistency, and accuracy. The role is structured and intentional, and each participant helps verify that the system performs as designed. As a playtester, you are expected to:

  • Read the rules and interpret them exactly as written to confirm clarity and accuracy, reporting any areas of confusion.
  • Schedule and host games, either solo or with a group
  • Record and report results using the tools provided to the team
  • Ask focused questions when something appears unclear, inconsistent, or incomplete
  • Identify issues that do not match the expected feel of the Helldivers video game, including pacing, tone, and tactical flow
  • Use the most current version of the rules, cards, and quick start materials, which are made available to all playtesters
  • Provide feedback that is direct, specific, and grounded in actual gameplay

These expectations ensure that every session produces reliable data and that the game continues to move toward a stable, polished final form.

Requirements for Playtesters

Playtesting requires a basic level of commitment and the tools needed to run reliable, repeatable sessions. The following requirements ensure every playtester can contribute meaningful data that supports the development of a stable, accurate final game

  • Willingness to read draft rules and provide clear, constructive feedback
  • Ability to run at least 2-4 test games per month (solo or with a group)
  • Access to basic gaming tools: dice, measuring tape, tokens, and a 4’x4′ or larger play area
  • Access to or ability to 3d print proxy miniatures or models that fit the intended scale (28-32mm)
  • Comfort using Google Drive, PDFs, updating to new rule versions, and reporting issues
  • Participation in surveys, feedback forms, or a dedicated playtest Discord/portal
  • Agreement to keep unreleased materials confidential during the test period
  • Openness to testing experimental rules, edge cases, and scenario variations
  • Willingness to document results, including wins/losses, pain points, and standout moments
  • A positive, collaborative attitude focused on improving the game rather than “winning” the test environment

How to Submit Feedback as a Playtester

All playtest data is reported through the official feedback form provided to the team. This is where you document results, note unclear rules, and flag anything that doesn’t match expected Helldivers pacing or tone. Consistent reporting after each session ensures we can verify issues, track patterns, and make informed adjustments to the game.

A qualifying battle report must include:

  • A completed entry on the official form
  • At least 3 photos of your game

Playtesting Rank Tiers

The playtesting program is a structured, rank-based system that rewards active participation. This system ensures that new material goes to troopers who demonstrate steady participation through verified battle reports and help strengthen the game through real, documented play.
